Ireland squanders millions on school sites

The Irish State spent tens of millions of euros buying sites for new schools at the height of the boom which have never been built.

Schools on 35 sites, costing more than €42m, are still only on the design and planning stages — with no progress at all on others.

This is despite 1,200 schools across the State looking for new buildings or extensions.

Some of the sites were bought as far back as 1978, but most were bought in the mid-2000s when land prices were at their highest.

The lack of progress comes despite record spending on new schools during the Celtic Tiger boom. In 2009, some €656m was allocated for school buildings, but was not all spent.

Earlier this month, Tanaiste and Education Minister Mary Coughlan admitted that €62m of this year’s allocation would not be spent on new buildings.

Fine Gael education spokes-man Fergus O’Dowd said the fact that sites were lying idle when schools needed new buildings was “incredible”.

“We now have sites bought at the top of the boom and they can’t build schools on them when construction costs were never lower,” he said.

“The minister is not able to spend her capital budget this year, the second year in a row this has happened.

“It’s incredible this work can’t be done. Hundreds of skilled tradesmen could have been employed.”

The Department of Education said that sites were bought on the basis of need at the time.

British shipbuilders axed because Poles are 30% cheaper???

Tabloid propaganda or commercial reality?

The Daily Mail carried a story a couple of weeks ago about British skilled tradesmen in shipbuilding losing their jobs while their Polish counterparts were kept on.

“Hundreds of Britons who were building two aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy have lost their jobs because they were not as cheap as Polish workers, it was claimed last night.

In the past six weeks, around 300 Britons working on the £5.2billion warships have been sacked.

But none of the cut-price Poles has been laid off. They earn around £9.50 an hour while UK tradesmen doing similar jobs are paid £15 an hour.”

Lower down the article it goes on to say that the British workers with were with one agency and the Polish were with another.

Yellow Pages ads abandoned by tradesmen

Yellow Pages ads were once the mainstay of advertising for local tradesmen, however tradesmen are moving their advertising spend online, with new research showing consumers increasingly switching to the internet to locate local tradesmen, rather than the Yellow Pages.

In October alone in Australia there were 368,000 searches on Google for builders, 90,500 searches for electricians and 60,500 searches for plumbers.
